1909 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements: Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
Pair of M101-2 Sporting News supplements featuring legendary Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. 1) Ty Cobb: Issued August 12, 1909. Presents as Vg from the front, with a crisp image of Cobb holding a bat below his waist, light wear to the corners (including a small crease in the upper left), and light staining along the right and left edges. Technically grades lesser due to vintage tape on the reverse as well as more advanced staining. 2) Christy Mathewson: Issued August 5, 1909. Flawless image of Mathewson pitching, presenting as Gd/Vg from the front, but technically grading lesser due to three vertical creases most visible against the blank reverse. While each premium technically grades modestly, both maintain a superior and extremely presentable appearance and represent an exciting, relatively affordable opportunity to acquire card-related items of Cobb and Mathewson dating from their playing days. Dimensions: approximately 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 2 premiums. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
