1971, 1973, 1977, 1978, & 1979 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Complete Set Collection (18 sets, 5,103 cards)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $4,500
Presented is a tremendous collection of seventeen complete sets and one partial set of O-Pee-Chee baseball cards spanning the years 1971 to 1979. This collection has been carefully stored away since the years of issue and consists of one complete 1973 set, eight complete 1977 sets, seven complete 1978 sets, one complete 1979, and a partial set of 1971 (consisting of #1-263; missing #264-752). This lot totals a staggering 5,103 cards from these various 1970s O-Pee-Chee sets. Included within this collection are dozens of Hall of Famers and stars, including Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, George Brett, Pete Rose, and the rookie cards of Mike Schmidt, Eddie Murray, and Ozzie Smith. The condition of this collection is quite impressive, ranging from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt), with a few technically lesser. It is crisp and clean throughout, with bright colors, sharp corners, and overall outstanding centering. Almost all of the cards grading Vg-Ex to Ex are downgraded entirely due to centering issues, common to sets from this era, while presenting with the same bold and fresh appearance as the higher-grade examples. These sets have been consigned directly by a now long-retired professional photographer who provided production photos for cards decades ago, and who naturally had a great personal interest in the hobby. He put away many then-modern boxes and sets in case they would become valuable in later years; we believed that all were sold by REA years ago, but (following a recent move) he just found additional boxes in storage that were long forgotten! An outstanding and substantial collection of complete sets from these very popular 1970s O-Pee-Chee issues! Total: 5,103 cards (17 complete sets and one partial set). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,500
