1963 Post Cereal Complete Master Set (209) Plus 163 Additional Variations! (372 Different Cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,600

Presented is by far the most extraordinary and simply unprecedented collection of 1963 Post Cereal Baseball cards ever offered or perhaps even even assembled: This simply remarkable collection consists of an exceptional complete master set of 1963 Post Cereal, consisting of all 200 cards in a basic set plus nine variations as documented in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards . . . PLUS, incredibly, an additional 163 unchecklisted variations (relating to colors, cropping, and statistics). The Standard Catalog notes that these numerous variations "exist due to the different cereal boxes on which the cards were printed"; however, it would be nearly impossible to get an accurate count of exactly many of these such variations exist. (We bet it would be pretty close to 163 though!)

This set has been consigned by one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and (as can be seen here!) an unparalleled focus on variations and extreme completeness. Frankly, we've never seen anything like this for 1963 Post and had no idea the assembly of a master set collection with this incredible number of variations was even possible. (We can say the same about his 1961 and 1962 Post Cereal sets, which are presented as separate lots in this auction.) The condition of this extraordinary collection: 45% Ex-Mt or better, 17% Ex, 13% Vg-Ex, and 25% lesser (including 10% that presents as Ex-Mt or better but has very faint, very small erased writing in one corner of the reverse, likely a price). The preceding grades, as well as those in the composite below, are without respect to the neatness of the cut as professional grading companies require that all of the borders be present in order for a card to receive a numerical grade, and many of these cards would only qualify for "Authentic" because they are cut inside of, or too close to, the borders. (This set, as a whole, is cut FAR better than is normally encountered with Post Cereal cards.) We submitted three cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #15 Mantle (Authentic, otherwise Ex-Mt), 16 Maris (Ex), 30 Thomas (Ex), 39 Robinson (Ex), 53 Bunning (Ex-Mt+), 61 Adair (Nr/Mt), 80 Yastrzemski (Nr/Mt), 86 Lumpe (Ex-Mt front, erased writing on reverse), 87 Jimenez (Vg+), 106 Mays (Ex-Mt), 108 Haller (Ex-Mt), 119 Davis (Ex+), 128 Kasko (Gd/Vg), two 131 Robinson (Ex+ and Vg-Ex), two 143 Clemente (EX 5 and Vg+), 152 Aaron (NM 7), 162 Flood (Nr/Mt), 172 B. Williams (Ex-Mt+), 187 Aspromonte (Nr/Mt), and 196 Thomas (Vg). We think it is reasonable to suggest that this lot may literally be a once-in-a-lifetime collecting opportunity! This is, without a doubt, the finest and most complete set of this scarce and extremely underrated early 1960s food issue that we have ever seen or heard of (or even contemplated!), let alone offered. Total: 372 cards.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,600
