1961 Post Cereal Complete Master Set (357) Plus 207 Additional Variations! (564 Different Cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,100
Presented is the single most extraordinary and unprecedented collection of 1961 Post Cereal Baseball cards ever offered or even assembled. This almost unfathomable collection consists of an exceptional complete master set of 1961 Post Cereal, consisting of all 200 cards in a basic set PLUS 157 company variations as documented in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards...PLUS, incredibly, an additional 207 unchecklisted variations (relating to colors, cropping, and statistics). The Standard Catalog notes that these numerous variations "exist due to the different cereal boxes on which the cards were printed"; however, it would be nearly impossible to get an accurate count of exactly many of these such variations exist. (We bet it would be pretty close to 207 though!)
This set has been consigned by one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and (as can be seen here!) an unparalleled focus on variations and extreme completeness. Frankly, we've never seen anything like this for 1961 Post and had no idea the assembly of a master set collection with this incredible number of variations was even possible. (We can say the same about his 1962 and 1963 Post Cereal sets, which are presented as separate lots in this auction.) The condition of this extraordinary collection: 68% Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), 20% Vg-Ex, and 12% lesser. The preceding grades, as well as those in the composite below, are without respect to the neatness of the cut on the box cards as professional grading companies require that all of the borders be present in order for a card to receive a numerical grade, and many of these cards would only qualify for "Authentic" because they are cut inside of, or too close to, the borders. (This set, as a whole, is cut FAR better than is normally encountered with Post Cereal cards.) We submitted four cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1a Berra (Ex+), 1b Berra (Vg-Ex), 4a Mantle (VG-EX 4), 4b Mantle (NM 7), 7a Maris (pen on reverse, otherwise Ex), 7b Maris (Vg), 10 McDougald (Vg-Ex+), 22a Wynn (Gd), 22b Wynn (Ex), 23 Shaw (Vg), three 35a Kaline (Gd and two Pr), 35b Kaline (Vg-Ex), 73 Estrada (company, Ex), 75a B. Robinson (Pr), 75b B. Robinson (Ex-Mt), 92a Killebrew (Ex), 92b Killebrew (Ex), 93a J. Lemon (Vg-Ex), 93b J. Lemon (Ex), 94 Stobbs (Ex), 106 Mathews (Vg+), three 107a Aaron (Ex-Mt and two Vg), 107b Aaron (Ex), 132a Clemente (Fr), 132b Clemente (EX-MT 6), 135 Virdon (Ex), three 145a Mays (Vg-Ex and two Vg), 145b Mays (NM-MT+ 8.5), 147a McCovey (Ex-Mt), 147b McCovey (Vg), 163 Roach (Ex), two 167a Snider (Ex-Mt and Ex), 167b Snider (Ex), 182a F. Robinson (Ex), 182b F. Robinson (Ex), two 183 McMillan (both Ex-Mt), 193a Thomas (Ex+), and 193b Thomas (Ex). We think it is reasonable to suggest that this lot may literally be a once-in-a-lifetime collecting opportunity! This is, without a doubt, the finest and most complete set of this scarce and extremely underrated early 1960s food issue that we have ever seen or heard of (or even contemplated!), let alone offered. Total: 564 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,100
