1972 Topps and O-Pee-Chee Near-Complete Sets
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
Addendum: Both sets presented here are incomplete (actual counts are reflected below). The title in the printed catalog is in error.
Presented is a pair of near-complete sets from the 1972 O-Pee-Chee and Topps issues. The Topps set consists of 782 different cards (out of 787), while the O-Pee-Chee set consists of 394 different (out of 525). O-Pee-Chee baseball cards were issued regionally only in Canada and are much rarer than their American counterparts. They are particularly rare to find in complete set form. The 1972 Topps series is one of the most popular Topps sets of the decade, and the O-Pee-Chee version parallels the first 525 cards using the same design, with only slight differences in the stock and text in both English and French on the reverse. 1) 1972 Topps Near Complete Set (782/787): Condition of this set ranges from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex), with some lesser. Missing five cards for completion: #436 Jackson IA, 441 Munson, 560 Rose IA, 711 Bonds, and 714 Michael IA. Keys: #49 Mays (Vg), 79 Fisk/Cooper (Vg-Ex+), 299 Aaron (Vg-Ex+), 300 Aaron IA (Vg-Ex), 309 Clemente (Gd), 310 Clemente IA (Gd), 559 Rose (Vg), 595 Ryan (Vg+), 686 Garvey (Ex), 695 Carew (Vg-Ex), 751 Carlton TR (Ex), 752 Morgan TR (Vg-Ex). 2) 1972 O-Pee-Chee Near-Complete Set (394/525): Condition of this set is 80% Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt) and 20% Vg-Ex (due almost entirely to hard-to-see wrinkles or centering issues). Missing #395-525 for completion. Keys: #49 Mays (Ex), 79 Fisk/Cooper (Vg-Ex+), 299 Aaron (Ex-Mt), 300 Aaron IA (Vg-Ex+), 309 Clemente (Vg-Ex+), 310 Clemente IA (Vg-Ex+). An outstanding opportunity to acquire two near-complete sets of these classic 1970s issues, including a particularly scarce near-complete O-Pee-Chee set, which would provide a tremendous foundation for the assembly of a high-quality complete set. Total: 2 sets, 1,176 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $840
