1888 N173 Goodwin Dogs Head Cabinet Curt Welch

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,200

Exceptionally rare 1888 N173 Dogs Head cabinet card featuring Curt Welch (Philadelphia Athletics). All N173 Old Judges are rare, but examples with Dogs Head advertising are particularly rare, and all Dogs Head cabinets are extremely desirable among serious pre-1900 and sample-card collectors. In fact, this is only the fourth Dogs Head cabinet (of any player) we have offered during the past twenty years! This card features a striking photo of Welch bending over to field a ball in a posed studio setting. While the photo contrast is a little light in places (specifically in the nameplate area), there is still great detail visible in the image, right down to the laces of Welch's shoes. This is a very attractive card, with no creases, light touches of wear at the corners (slightly more in the upper right), and virtually perfect centering of the mounted image. The reverse is mostly clean, with pencil notations of Welch's name, position, and team visible near the top. Graded and encapsulated POOR 10 by SGC due to small holes (from mounting) in each of the four corners. While it technically grades modestly, this is a beautiful card with a strong Vg to Vg-Ex appearance. An extremely rare and striking sample card from this prestigious nineteenth-century cabinet-card series.  Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,200
