1955 Topps Doubleheaders Complete SGC-Graded Unperforated Proof Set (66)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,400

Complete 66-card set of 1955 Topps Doubleheaders, presented in a very rarely seen unfolded and unperforated state, highlighted by an incredible MINT example of key card, Jackie Robinson. When issued in packs, these cards were perforated horizontally, allowing for easy folding. 1955 Topps Doubleheaders were never issued in this special unperforated form. A set of this type had to have originated at some time directly from someone involved in the printing of the set, or someone at Topps who had been provided with this set by the printer for proofing. The offered cards were pulled from production prior to the final perforation and folding process. All sixty-six cards of this complete unperforated proof set have been graded and encapsulated by SGC.

The SGC grades are as follows:
Four MINT 96: #25/26 Robinson, 71/72, 117/118, and 119/120. Six NM/MT+ 92: #5/6, 75/76, 77/78, 79/80, 95/96, and 97/98. Twenty-one NM/MT 88: #3/4 Irvin, 27/28, 29/30, 31/32 Banks, 33/34, 35/36, 67/68, 69/70 Williams, 81/82, 83/84, 89/90, 93/94, 101/102, 103/104, 105/106 Aaron, 107/108, 109/110 Newhouser, 111/112 Killebrew, 113/114, 115/116, and 121/122 Kluszewski. One NM+ 86: #91/92. Fifteen NM 84: #7/8, 9/10, 13/14, 37/38, 55/56, 57/58, 59/60, 61/62, 65/66 Collins, 85/86, 87/88, 99/100, 123/124, 125/126, and 127/128 Spahn. Four EX/NM+ 82: #11/12, 39/40, 53/54, and 73/74. Nine EX/NM 80: #1/2, 15/16, 17/18, 21/22, 23/24, 41/42, 43/44, 51/52, and 63/64. Five EX+ 70: #19/20, 45/46 Kaline, 47/48, 49/50, and 129/130. One EX 60: #131/132.

This is one of only three sets we have ever handled in this rare unperforated proof form. (We're not sure, but two of the sets may, in fact, be one and the same; it is very possible that one of them is actually the very same proof set we auctioned many, many years ago prior to the cards being submitted for professional grading.) A complete SGC-graded set of unperforated Doubleheaders (the last time we offered a set!) appeared as lot #367 in REA's 2005 auction, at that time realizing $11,600. Doubleheaders are one of the scarcest and most unusual of all early 1950s gum issues. This complete set, in addition to being in a very rare and unusual form, is easily one of the finest sets in existence in terms of condition. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades, with the sixteen half-grades factored in at the lower whole-grade level and no premium added for their special unperforated proof form, is $21,044. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire a remarkable complete proof set of one of Topps' most heralded issues in its extremely rare unperforated state. Total: 66 cards representing 132 players.   Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,400
