1953 Topps Complete Master Set (274 Cards Plus 80 Variations)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,200

Presented is an extremely high-quality complete master set of 1953 Topps, one of the most popular and classic of all baseball card sets, consisting of all 274 cards in a basic set PLUS eighty text-color variations for a total of 354 cards! This set has been consigned by one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s, with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and (as can be seen here!) completeness. In all our years, this is the first 1953 Topps master set we have ever offered. It is rare to find 1953 Topps in such across-the-board high-grade condition, and this extremely strong set in our opinion presents even better than suggested by its technical grades. The complete basic set grades 17% Nr/Mt, 34% Ex-Mt, 44% Ex, and 5% Vg-Ex (including a few lesser). Many of the cards graded Ex or Ex-Mt possess the same bright, crisp appearance as the higher-graded cards but are downgraded due to centering or light touches of wear at the corners or along the delicate colored borders. The set is almost entirely crease free! We submitted eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC.

#1 Robinson (EX/NM 80), 10 Burgess SP (Ex), 27 Campanella (EX+ 70), 37 Mathews (NM+ 86), 41 Slaughter (Ex-Mt), 43 McDougald SP (Ex), 54 Feller (Ex), 61 Wynn SP (EX/MT+ 82), 76 Reese (Ex), 77 Mize (Ex), 78 Schoendienst (Ex+), 81 Black SP (Vg-Ex+), 82 Mantle (EX+ 70), 86 Martin SP (Vg-Ex), 87 Lopat SP (Ex), 104 Berra (Ex+), 114 Rizzuto (Vg), 119 Sain SP (Ex), 138 Kell (Vg), 147 Spahn (Ex), 151 Wilhelm SP (Vg-Ex+), 162 Kluszewski SP (Ex-Mt), 191 Kiner (Ex), 207 Ford (Ex), 220 Paige (EX+ 70), 228 Newhouser (Ex+), 244 Mays (Authentic, due to color added, otherwise Ex-Mt), 246 Face (Ex), 254 Roe (Ex-Mt), 258 Gilliam (Ex), 263 Podres SP (Nr/Mt), 264 Woodling (Vg-Ex), 265 Jensen SP (Vg-Ex), 273 Haddix SP (Ex+), and 280 Bolling SP (Ex-Mt). The eighty black-text variations for cards #86-165, which feature the biographical information about the player (such as birthdate, hometown, and height/weight) in black ink instead of white, grade 25% Ex-Mt, 70% Ex, and 5% lesser. Keys: #86 Martin (Ex+), 104 Berra (EX 60), 114 Rizzuto (Ex+), and 147 Spahn (Ex).

The flush-to-the-bottom-border design of the 1953 Topps set makes this issue particularly susceptible to edge and corner wear, and makes the assembly of high-grade sets all the more difficult. This is an exceptionally attractive mid- to high-grade set, far above average for this issue, with tremendous eye-appeal across the board. A high-quality and very carefully assembled complete set of one of card collecting's most popular issues. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade for just seven of the eight graded cards (factoring in three of the half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the Authentic Mays as well as the 346 ungraded cards!) is $3,190. This is a particularly outstanding set of remarkable quality! Total: 354 cards (complete set of 274 plus 80 variations).  Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $10,200
