1888 N338-2 S. F. Hess Gil Hatfield
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,160
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card of Gil Hatfield from the S. F. Hess tobacco set, one of the most elusive of all pre-1900 card issues. The S. F. Hess series features primarily New York Giants players. Of the twenty-three subjects known to date, sixteen are members of the Giants, champions of the National League in 1888 and 1889. The offered example is only one of two cards of Hatfield graded by SGC to date (the other grades GOOD 30). The card displays relatively strong photo contrast, with light foxing on the image area and even wear at the corners (slightly more in the upper left). The blank reverse is almost entirely clean, with light foxing and age spotting present. A top-quality example from one of the nineteenth century's rarest baseball-card sets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,160
