1888 N173 Goodwin Dogs Head Cabinet Jack Glasscock

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,800

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Exceptionally rare 1888 N173 Dogs Head cabinet card featuring Jack Glasscock of Indianapolis. This is a stunning card! Glasscock was a major nineteenth-century star and universally regarded as one of the premier shortstops in the Major Leagues throughout his seventeen-year career (1879-1895). He has long been widely regarded as a serious candidate for future induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. All N173 Old Judges are rare, but examples with Dogs Head advertising are particularly rare, and extremely desirable among serious pre-1900 and sample-card collectors. In fact, this is only the fourth Dogs Head cabinet (of any player) we have offered during the past twenty years! This card features a striking photo of Glasscock leaning on a bat in a posed studio setting. The photo contrast is strong, with great detail visible in the image, right down to the holes on Glasscock's belt. This is an extraordinary card that presents far better than suggested by its assigned grade. The mount is perfectly clean, with virtually no wear at the corners and a well-centered image. Only a small wrinkle on the left part of the image area accounts for the grade, despite an Ex-Mt or better appearance. The blank reverse is almost entirely clean, with a few insignificant age spots mentioned for the sake of accuracy. An extremely rare and striking sample card from this legendary nineteenth-century cabinet-card series.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,800
