1953 Bowman Black & White One-Cent Display Box and Wax Wrapper
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,040
Original one-cent display box and wax wrapper from the 1953 Bowman Black & White baseball series. The display box originally housed 120 penny packs of this popular issue. This is a particularly rare display box, the first we have ever handled, and only the second we have seen available at public auction in the last fifteen years. It is stunning! The box features a brilliant green and orange illustration of an umpire underneath the words "Play Ball" and alongside an advertisement for bubble gum at a cost of one penny. Presenting as Excellent, the box retains its original bright colors and displays traces of light shelf wear at the corners and along the edges. Very light creasing is present on the side panels under close inspection and on the bottom panel, none of which detracts from the impressive display value. The box has been sealed shut. The original wax wrapper (4-13/16 x 5-11/16 inches) also advertises "Play Ball Bubble Gum" in bright orange text alongside an illustration of an umpire, baseball bat, and fielder. Copyright information reading "1953 Bowman Gum Division" is printed vertically along the right edge. Presents as Excellent (flattened for display), but would technically grade more modestly due to scattered wrinkling. Two superb companion pieces to any complete 1953 Bowman Black & White set or addition to any advertising or display collection. Total: 2 items (one display box and one wrapper). Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,040
