1953 Bowman Color Complete Set (160) Plus Uncut Three-Card Panel and Original Wax Wrapper
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $12,000
22% Nr/Mt, 31% Ex-Mt, and 47% Ex. Beautifully assembled complete set of 1953 Bowman Color accompanied by a three-card salesman's sample uncut panel and original five-cent wax wrapper. This is a particularly outstanding set! The set has been very carefully assembled and is exceptionally strong, perhaps stronger than can be easily communicated by a simple grading composite. Almost all of the cards graded Ex are extremely attractive examples that are consistent with the rest of the set, but we have downgraded almost entirely due to centering. All cards are bright and crisp, with stunning images, bold colors, and free of creasing. This set has been consigned by a pioneer collector who did most of his collecting during the 1960s and 1970s and collected with a very keen focus on condition, eye-appeal, and completeness. We have selected ten cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Williams (NM 84), 9 Rizzuto (10/90 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 10 Ashburn (10/90 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 18 Fox (Nr/Mt), 32 Musial (NM+ 86), 33 Reese (EX 60), 40 Doby (NM 84), 44 Bauer/Berra/Mantle (EX 60), 46 Campanella (EX/MT+ 82), 51 Irvin (Ex-Mt), 59 Mantle (EX+ 70), 65 Roberts (Ex-Mt), 80 Kiner (10/90 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 81 Slaughter (Ex), 92 Hodges (NM 84), 93 Rizzuto/Martin (Ex), 97 Mathews (EX/MT+ 82), 99 Spahn (no bottom border, otherwise Nr/Mt), 101 Schoendienst (no bottom border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 114 Feller (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt+), 117 Snider (15/85 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 118 Martin (Ex), 121 Berra (90/10 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 143 Lopez (Ex+), 146 Wynn (Ex), 153 Ford (NM 84), and 160 Abrams (Ex-Mt). Also included with this complete set is an exceptional uncut three-card panel (Nr/Mt) featuring Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner alongside Eddie Joost and Ken Raffensberger and an original five-cent wax wrapper (4-15/16 x 5-3/4 inches, Vg), which is very scarce among early 1950s gum wrappers and is even more noteworthy to collectors as the wrapper features Joe DiMaggio's likeness and endorsement. This is a stunning complete set of this classic 1950s gum-card issue in a grade representing an outstanding value compared to a set in technically higher grade, but without sacrificing exceptional visual appeal. The equivalent SMR value for just the ten graded cards in the assigned grades (factoring in three of the half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the additional 150 gorgeous cards! Also not including the panel or wrapper) is $3,785. Total: 160 cards, one uncut panel, and wax wrapper. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $12,000
