Rare 1952 Shelby Bicycles Yogi Berra Card & Related Advertisements
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,320
Presented is an extremely rare promotional card featuring New York Yankees Hall of Famer Yogi Berra endorsing . . . Shelby Bicycles! Dating to circa 1952, Berra is pictured on this black-and-white real-photo card (5 x 7 inches) in his familiar catching pose, which also appeared on his 1950 Bowman card. Underneath is his endorsement, "Ride Shelby/"The Winner's Bike"/Sincerely/"Yogi" Berra." This is the first example of this card that we have offered, and it is the only example ever graded by either PSA or SGC. Graded and encapsulated GOOD+ 2.5 by PSA, the card has a strong Excellent or better appearance from the front, but is downgraded due to a vertical crease extending the entire length of the card, most visible from the reverse. Also accompanying the card are four newspaper advertisements featuring Berra as an endorser of the Shelby Bicycles line. The ads range in size from 6-3/16 x 4-3/4 inches (a cartoon advertisement) to 6 x 9-3/4 inches (a black-and-white ad boasting a free license plate with a new bike) and are printed on thin newspaper stock (all Nr/Mt condition). One of the ads features an illustration of the offered promotional card, which was available for free, along with a 16-page Shelby Bicycle catalog, to anyone who sent in a request! This is a tremendous archive of items relating to this very rare issue featuring Yogi Berra, and it would be at home in even the most advanced sample- or advertising-card collection. Total: 5 items. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,320
