1948-1949 Leaf PSA-Graded Original-Owner Hall of Famer and Rare Leaf Collection (17) Including DiMaggio, Newhouser, Williams, and Feller

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200

Presented is an exceptional collection of seventeen different cards from the 1948-1949 Leaf set comprised entirely Hall of Famers or Rare Leafs. This is an impressive group! These cards are part of a small but extraordinary original-owner collection consigned to this auction (the Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, and Babe Ruth cards from this same collection have been separated and are offered individually in this auction). Leafs are often encountered with many condition problems (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), and collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1948-1949 Leafs are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. This is an uncommonly high-grade collection of Hall of Famers and key rare cards from this highly collected set. Each of the seventeen cards is graded and encapsulated by PSA (submitted by REA). This collection consists of the following: #1 DiMaggio (HOF, VG 3), 5 Trucks SP (EX 5), 32 Spahn (HOF, EX-MT 6), 36 Zarilla SP (EX-MT 6), 43 Stevens SP (EX-MT 6), 55 Henrich SP (VG-EX 4), 68 Miller SP (EX-MT 6), 76 Williams (HOF, EX 5), 91 Kiner (HOF, EX-MT 6), 93 Feller SP (HOF, EX 5), 98 Newhouser RC SP (HOF, EX-MT 6), 108 Batts SP (NM 7), 120 Kell SP (HOF, NM-MT 8 [OC]), 131 Gordon SP (EX-MT 6), 146 Reiser SP (EX 5), 160 Scheffing SP (EX 5), and 163 Hutchinson SP (EX 5). Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the most difficult postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. This is a very impressive-looking collection with many significant highlights from this classic gum-card issue. The SMR value in the assigned grades for just fifteen of the cards (not including the one card graded lower than EX and the one qualified card) is $6,950. Total: 17 cards.  Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $13,200
