1948 W464 Baseball's Great Hall of Fame Exhibits Collection (97 Cards; 3 Near-Sets!)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840

Collection of ninety-seven 1948 Hall of Fame Exhibits, representing three near-complete sets: two near-complete sets are missing just one card each and one near-complete set is missing two cards. Also included are two duplicates. These unnumbered black-and-white (in some cases green-tint) Exhibit cards feature all-time great Hall of Famers, and no doubt instilled a great appreciation of baseball history in youngsters of the day. The 1948 Hall of Fame Exhibit cards were issued on cardboard stock and each card has the player's brief biography printed along the bottom. These near-complete sets originate from a very old-time collection and have been stored away for decades. 1) Near-Complete Set of 32/33 cards. Missing only Ruth/standing with bats for completion. Condition is Ex overall, including Ruth/batting and Cobb, with three Vg-Ex. 2) Near-Complete Set of 32/33 cards. Missing only Ruth/standing with bats for completion. Condition is Ex overall, including Ruth/batting, with seven Vg to Vg-Ex, including Cobb, and one lesser. 3) Near-Complete Set of 31/33 cards. Missing Cobb and Ruth/standing with bats for completion. Condition is Vg-Ex overall, with twenty-one Gd, including Ruth/batting, almost entirely due to flaws on the reverse, such as glue residue or paper loss. These sets are naturally highlighted by many of the great legends of the game, including Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, and Cy Young. This set was reproduced in 1977 and the reproductions (which are printed in various colors) sometimes cause confusion. This is a very sizable collection of original 1948 cards from this classic and often overlooked Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 99 cards.  Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $840
