1949 Sealtest Phillies Richie Ashburn
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600
Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC (submitted by REA). Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn from the extremely rare regional set issued in 1949 in the Philadelphia area by Sealtest Dairy. Both the Sealtest set and the rare Lummis Peanut Butter set used the same design (although Sealtest cards were produced with peel-off sticker backs), photos, and checklist of Phillies players to advertise their product on the reverse of each card in the twelve-card set. (Interestingly, we are also offering a rare Lummis Peanut Butter Ashburn in the Internet Only section of this auction as lot #1319.) The offered example of Ashburn is crisp and clean, with a flawless surface and strong corners. The reverse is boldly printed and almost entirely clean, with only trace evidence of glue (from underneath the peel-off back) visible along the perimeter and in the center of the back. This is entirely normal with Sealtest cards because of how they were produced. An extremely attractive and high-grade example of Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn from this exceptionally rare postwar food issue, which advanced collectors recognize as among the rarest of all regional card issues. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $600
