1939 R334 Play Ball PSA-Graded Partial Set (120/161) Including DiMaggio and Williams Rookie

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,400

Extremely attractive partial set of 1939 Play Balls issued by Gum, Inc., consisting of 120 of the 161 total cards in the set. 117 of the cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA. Also included are twenty-eight ungraded duplicates. The first of three major baseball-card sets by Gum, Inc., this landmark set includes Ted Williams’ rookie card, Joe DiMaggio, and all of the other major stars and Hall of Famers of the era. The rarer high-number series cards (#116-162) in 1939 Play Ball have always made the assembly of a complete set particularly challenging for collectors. This collection consists of the following: NM-MT+ 8.5 (4 cards): #83, 88, 99, and 105. NM-MT 8 (14 cards): #13, 38, 39, 40, 72, 79, 84, 87, 96, 100, 101, 107, 109, and 114. NM+ 7.5 (8 cards): #24, 34, 54, 74, 89 L.Waner (HOF), 90, 91, and 110. NM 7 (13 cards): #4, 12, 23, 28, 45, 49, 63, 65, 68, 78, 95, 97, and 98. EX-MT+ 6.5 (5 cards): #37, 62, 71, 80, and 81. EX-MT 6 (11 cards): #1, 14, 20, 21, 36, 47, 56 Greenberg (HOF), 73, 93, 104, and 111. EX+ 5.5 (7 cards): #3 Ruffing (HOF), 5, 10, 18, 25, 29, and 59. EX 5 (20 cards): #17, 30 Dickey (HOF), 31, 32, 33, 46, 52, 57, 58, 64, 66, 67, 75, 86, 94 Manush (HOF), 102, 103, 106, 108, and 130. VG-EX+ 4.5 (12 cards): #2, 9, 11, 27, 35, 41, 42, 43, 44, 61, 69, and 145. VG-EX 4 (20 cards): #6 Durocher (HOF), 8, 15, 16, 19, 22, 26 DiMaggio (HOF), 50 Gehringer (HOF), 53 Hubbell (HOF), 60, 70, 76, 77, 85, 92 Williams (HOF), 112 P.Waner (HOF), 115, 121, 131, and 142. VG 3 (1 card): #113. GOOD 2 (2 cards): #7 Doerr (HOF) and 82 Klein (HOF). Ungraded: #48 Gomez (HOF, Ex), 51 Ott (HOF, Vg-Ex+), and 55 Vaughan (HOF, Vg-Ex). The twenty-eight duplicates grade Vg to Vg-Ex overall, with five lesser due to ink on the front. While 1939 Play Balls are numbered #1 through 162, no #126 was ever issued, making the set complete at 161 cards. This is a very attractive partial set in an extremely desirable grade, with countless highlights, including the key cards of Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. The total SMR value for the 117 graded cards (factoring in the twenty-four EX-MT+, EX+ and VG-EX+ half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $7,186. Total: 148 cards (partial set of 120 cards plus twenty-eight duplicates).  Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $5,400
