1939-1946 W462 Salutation Exhibits Near-Complete Set (73/83) Plus 176 Duplicates

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,440

Presented is an outstanding near-complete set of W462 Salutation Exhibits consisting of seventy-three out of the eighty-three cards in the set as checklisted in the Standard Catalog. Also included are an incredible 176 duplicates! The near-set is highlighted by the Ted Williams (#9 on back) variation, one of the key rarities within this set. These unnumbered cards are not dated and were issued over a series of years, so they are generally collected as a single set. Some cards in this Exhibit-card series were issued for numerous years, while other players were issued for only a short period of time, thus creating many rarities. Because they have the player's signature and a "salutation" scripted at the bottom, they are often referred to as "Salutation Exhibits." The rarities in this set make the assembly of a complete set one of the most difficult of all Exhibit-card sets. The ten missing cards are Averill, Cuccinello, Gehrig, Hartnett, Klein, Kreevich, Lombardi/Cordially, Mulcahy, Pafko/plain, and Rizzo. The cards in this collection grade 52% Vg to Ex and 48% lesser (almost entirely due to writing or paper loss on the reverse). Keys: Dean (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), two Dickey/right (Vg-Ex+ and Pr), six DiMaggio (Ex, two Vg-Ex, Gd, Fr, and Pr), Feller/port. (pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex), eight Feller/pitching (Ex+, four Ex, Gd, Fr, and Pr), Foxx (Vg-Ex), Gehringer (Pr), Gomez (Ex), Greenberg/Very truly yours (Ex+), Holmes/Sincerely yours (Vg-Ex), Newson (Ex), Russel (Fr), Vander Meer (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), Williams/#9 shows (Ex), and ten Williams/#9 not showing (five Ex, Vg-Ex, two Gd, and two Pr). While the cards in this collection span many grades, it represents a relatively affordable opportunity to acquire a near-complete set (the second-largest we have ever offered) of this classic Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 249 cards (near-complete set of 73 plus 176 duplicates).  Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,440
