1935 R321 Goudey "4 in 1" Complete Set (36): #11 PSA Set Registry (5.39 GPA)!

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,100

Presented is an extremely attractive, exceptionally high grade complete set of thirty-six cards from the classic 1935 R321 Goudey issue. Each card is graded and encapsulated by PSA. The complete set ranks eleventh on the PSA Set Registry with an overall GPA of 5.39. This is a very strong set for this often overlooked and extremely condition-sensitive gum-card issue. An average grade of 5.39 is far superior statistically for R321 1935 Goudeys than for almost all other 1930s gum-card issues. (The flush-to-the-border design makes the edges and corners particularly sensitive to wear.) The 1935 Goudey series is also one of the company’s most interesting efforts. Each card features four players and the set is highlighted by the legendary Babe Ruth. This was Ruth’s last card as a player. The portrait image of Ruth is a close-up detail from his 1933 Goudey card #181 dugout pose, and because the set was issued in 1935, he is identified on this card as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth appeared in just twenty-eight games with the Braves in 1935 before retiring as a player. The reverse of these cards feature puzzle pieces, which can be collected and assembled to form a large baseball picture. In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist.

PSA Grading Composite: Two EX-MT+ 6.5:
#6 Ott (HOF) and 30 Greenberg (HOF). Five EX-MT 6: #16 Ruth/Maranville (HOF), 22 Frisch/Dean (HOF), 28 Dickey/Lazzeri/Ruffing (HOF), 31 Foxx (HOF), and 32 Manush (HOF). Five EX+ 5.5: #10 Cronin (HOF), 11, 14 Bottomley (HOF), 24 Cochrane/Simmons (HOF), and 34 Terry (HOF). Seventeen EX 5: #1 Bottomley (HOF), 3, 5 Averill (HOF), 7, 9 Vance (HOF), 13 Lyons (HOF), 15, 17 Cochrane/Gehringer (HOF), 19 Hoyt/Waner/Waner, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27 Cuyler/Grimes (HOF), 29 Ferrell (HOF), 33, and 35. Two VG-EX+ 4.5: #12 and 36. Four VG-EX 4: #2, 4 Appling (HOF), 18, and 26 Goslin (HOF). One VG 3: #8.

Every card in this complete set is bright, crisp, and clean. It has been assembled painstakingly by our consignor over a period of years with a strict attention to condition and adding only extremely attractive examples. Complete sets of 1935 Goudey appear far less often than other Goudey issues. The reason is simple: They are rarer than most other Goudey issues. We have offered only a handful of complete sets in the last ten years! This is a very attractive technically mid- to high-grade (and for R321s, high-grade) complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by twenty-three Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth’s last card as a player. We can't help but note that in our opinion the SMR value of $1,450 for this extremely significant Ruth card in EX-MT 6 condition qualifies it as one of the great values of all Babe Ruth cards (though actual selling prices for this card are often higher than SMR). The total SMR value for thirty-five of the cards (factoring in the nine half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $5,007. Total: 36 cards.  Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,100
