1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Mike Dorgan

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

1888 G & B Chewing Gum cards have always been among the most legendary rarities of all nineteenth-century card issues. Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & B's were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball-card issues. It is rare to even find a sample and always a special privilege for REA to offer any examples. Presented is a very attractive sample from this unusual set, of New York Giants outfielder Mike Dorgan. This is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). Dorgan is pictured in the exact same pose as on his extremely rare Four Base Hits card. The offered sample presents as Excellent, with superb photo contrast and a flawless surface, but it has been neatly skinned, missing the entire back layer of cardboad, and is encapsulated as Authentic by SGC as a result. An uneven cut along the left border, likely related to the skinning, is also present. A very rare sample card, in modest grade but presenting far better, from this highly regarded and very elusive set.  Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,080
