1921-1923 E220 National Caramel Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $9,600

Graded GOOD+ 35 by SGC (submitted by REA). Extremely attractive, modestly graded example of New York Yankees Hall of Famer Babe Ruth from the E220 National Caramel series. Ruth is unquestionably the key card to the E220 set, which is sometimes confused with the American Caramel issues of the early 1920s, but the advertisement for "National Caramel" on the reverse easily identifies the series. E220s are much rarer than most other similarly designed sets of the era (such as E121), and for some reason are rarely seen in anything approaching high grade. The offered card displays a crisp image of Ruth in a batting follow-through centered slightly to the left. Light surface creasing in the lower left corner along with even rounding to the corners is responsible for the assigned grade. The reverse is boldly printed with light soiling present. This is an extremely presentable example of a very infrequently encountered Babe Ruth card from this early 1920s caramel issue.  Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $9,600
