1914 B18 Sewn Blanket Display Including Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
Sewn display of eight 1914 B18 Blankets, highlighted by blankets featuring Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb. These 5-1/4 inch squares of "flannel baseball cards" were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as "blankets" because they were meant to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This display has been carefully crafted to total dimensions of approximately 17-3/4 x 20-3/4 inches, with two baseball blankets on each side of a large American flag blanket and other national flags in each corner. The other six players who complete the display are Connelly, Cutshaw, Shotten, Sweeney, Tesreau, and Walsh. All blankets are free of any staining or color bleeding, but there is light fading from display. Jackson and Cobb, ideally, are in the best condition. The entire piece is carefully sewn onto a thin backing and is affixed to a cardboard matting (the blankets could very likely be separated from the backing and the matting to restore them to their original apperance). This is a beautifully sewn display piece utilizing B18s for their intended purpose, dating from the time of issue and highlighted by blankets of Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb, two of the keys to this fascinating set. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $540
