1889 N172 Old Judge Ed Delahanty - Rookie Card!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,800

Extremely attractive N172 example of Ed Delahanty (pose #123-1 - bat on right shoulder, 2d B., Phila), one of the rarest of all Old Judge Hall of Famers. All six poses of Ed Delahanty in Old Judge were issued only in 1889, a particularly scarce year compared to 1887 and 1888, no doubt contributing to Delahanty's significant rarity. While this card features Delahanty with the Philadelphia Nationals in his second year in the Majors, it is the first of his few baseball cards ever issued, and as such is recognized as Delahanty's rookie card. This is a stunning example that appears far better than its technical grade of POOR 10 from SGC suggests, which is entirely attributable to paper loss and album residue on the blank reverse (very common among nineteenth-century cards). The card features a crisp image with outstanding photo contrast, four sharp corners (with light wear visible in the top left and bottom right), and a flawless surface. Entirely crease-free and wrinkle-free, the card presents as Excellent or better at a glance and has been downgraded solely due to the previously mentioned back damage. This is a magnificent example of one of the key nineteenth-century and Old Judge Hall of Famer rarities.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,800
