1912 T207 Brown Background SGC-Graded Collection (4) Including Walter Johnson - All with Extremely Rare Brown Ink Printing on Reverse!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Fascinating collection of four T207 Brown Background cards, highlighted by Hall of Famer Walter Johnson, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. All four cards feature a Recruit Little Cigars advertising reverse. While Recruit is the most common of the several backs found on T207s, this small group is so notable because the advertisement on each is printed in brown ink as opposed to the standard black. Brown backs are incredibly rare, and we have only ever seen a few in our many years in the hobby. These four cards were obtained over a period of many years by a very dedicated collector who specialized in collecting T207s. He has handled more T207s that anyone we know and consciously kept a careful eye out for these brown-ink advertisements. Similar to the brown Lenox and brown Old Mill cards in the T206 set, the print on these cards is immediately apparent when placed alongside a standard Recruit back. The four cards offered in this collection are Daubert (VG/EX 50), Gainor (EX 60), Johnson (HOF, GOOD 30, due to a number written in pen on the reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex), and McBride (VG/EX 50). While we have no way of knowing how many brown-ink T207s exist, we know that they easily count as an extreme rarity. This is a superb collection of four brown Recruit T207s, in outstanding condition for the issue, and worthy of even the most advanced T207, printing anomaly, or prewar-card collection. Total: 4 cards.  Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,080
