Lot # 222 (of 1336)   < Previous Lot | Next Lot >

1912 T207 Brown Background George "Buck" Weaver

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,080

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely rare and highly desirable card from the 1912 T207 tobacco series featuring future “Black Sox” member Buck Weaver during his Major League playing days with Chicago. This is a very strong card for the grade, bright and crisp, with evenly rounded corners, a diagonal crease in the lower right, and a brilliant image centered slightly to the top left. There is no cigarette company advertisement on the reverse. Today these no-ad back cards are often referred to as "Anonymous" brand cards by collectors; in the old days many collectors referred to these as issued by Coupon Tobacco. Tremendous eye-appeal! This very card originally appeared as Lot #114 in REA's 2011 auction, realizing $1,175, as one of the many highlights from one of vintage-card collecting's most exciting recent discoveries: The Louisiana Find of 2010 (comprised of just ninety-four cards, all rarities, including eight T207 Red Cross back cards). This is an extremely desirable card both to Black Sox collectors and as one of the key rarities from the 1912 T207 Brown Background series, one of the premier tobacco-card sets of the era.  Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,080
