1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Willard "California" Brown

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,440

Presented is an attractive N173 Old Judge Cabinet of Willard "California" Brown (pose #45-3). Old Judge cabinet cards have always been revered by collectors as among the most desirable of all pre-1900 issues. Encapsulated by PSA as "Authentic," the offered card presents with extraordinary photo contrast and clarity (a little light in the name area). We cannot see any issue that caused this card not to receive a numerical grade; however, it would still technically grade modestly due to a small piece of excess paper on front (near the catcher's mask) as well as two small pencil notations and another piece of excess paper on the blank reverse. In the old days, none of these flaws would have mattered at all to advanced collectors, who valued a card for its superior photo quality as opposed to minor flaws, which "come with the territory" when dealing with nineteenth-century cards. An excellent opportunity for collectors to acquire a relatively affordable example from this extremely substantial nineteenth-century set at a fraction of the cost of a higher-graded specimen.  Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,440
