1909-1911 T206 White Border Vic Willis Throwing - Interesting Printing Error!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,680

Presented is an extremely fascinating T206 printing error of Hall of Famer Vic Willis (throwing pose), which has managed to escape at least one of the color processes and even at a glance appears entirely different than a normal, full color-process card. The offered card appears to be missing at least the blue-color process, which would form the green grass, as well as the blue stadium, in the background of the image. The cards presents as though it has only been through four steps of the color process: yellow (providing a base for the background), black (forming the border and player outline), brown (responsible for the player name and team caption, as well as shading the image), and red (providing the coloring to Willis' uniform). The card bears a fully printed Sweet Caporal 350-460, Factory 30, reverse. Clean and crisp on front, the card displays a few very small wrinkles and is neatly handcut. The reverse is clean. We believe these error cards to be printer's scraps which were never actually issued. It is likely all were hand-cut and saved from the trash by the printer or someone who worked for the printer. Many of the T206 printing errors in the market today entered the modern collecting world from old-time collections in the 1970s, during which time there was no interest in T206 printing-scrap errors. In those early days, these cards carried no premium value! Collectors today greatly appreciate all rare and unique T206 oddities, and consider cards like this extremely unusual and desirable. The T206 set, affectionately known as "The Monster," is the most popular of all 1910-era sets and is still yielding new and exciting discoveries more than a century after its production. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with this landmark set. This is an extremely unusual, interesting, and very striking printing error from the T206 series which is sure to be highly prized by collectors.  Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,680
