1909-1911 T206 Danny Murphy Batting Advertising Back Collection (18) Including White-and-Yellow Printing Anomaly, T213 Coupon, and T215 Red Cross

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900

Presented is an incredible collection of sixteen T206 Danny Murphy (batting pose) cards plus two rare tobacco cards from the T213 Coupon and T215 Red Cross sets. The extraordinary nature of this collection is easily seen even at a glance as each of the cards has a different advertisement and factory number on the reverse. This represents a near-complete collection of all known T206 advertising backs for this card (the extreme rarities, such as Broad Leaf 460, Drum, and Lenox are offered individually in this auction) plus two closely related tobacco issues in T213 and T215. Obviously, a great deal of time and effort has been invested in the assembly of this collection. Complete back collections of this size and scope for a specific T206 front are not seen because, with few exceptions, they simply do not exist. We have to say that seeing all these T206 Murphy cards, all with different backs, all in one place, has a impressive visual impact even for us (and we've seen a lot of T206s!).

T206s are the single most important and highly collected of all 1910-era cards. One of the primary characteristics of the T206 set is that most players are featured with different advertising on the reverses. This high-quality collection of eighteen cards of Murphy captures the spirit of the entire set, illustrating the different advertisements and factory combinations on the backs of the same player pose. Each card is a striking and high-quality example on its own, but together they complement one another, and tell part of the story of the T206 set. All seventeen cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (except for one PSA and one ungraded). SGC Grading Composite: One EX/NM 80: Polar Bear. One EX+ 70: Old Mill. Two EX 60: Piedmont 350 Factory 25 and Sweet Caporal 350 Factory 30. Seven VG/EX 50: El Principe de Gales, Piedmont 350 Factory 25 (PSA VG-EX 4), Sweet Caporal 350 Factory 25, Sweet Caporal 350-460 Factory 25, Sweet Caporal 350-460 Factory 42, Sweet Caporal 350-460 Factory 42 Overprint, and Tolstoi. Three VG 40: Cycle 460, Piedmont 350-460 Factory 25, and Sovereign 350. Two FAIR 20: T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 2 and T215 Red Cross Tobacco Type 2. One Authentic: Sweet Caporal 350-460 Factory 30 (white-and-yellow color variation; the offered card has only been through the first three steps of the color process: yellow, which provides a base for the background; black, which forms the border and player outline; and brown, which is responsible for the player name and team caption, as well as shading the image). One Ungraded: Sweet Caporal 350-460 Factory 42 (housed in Topps206 holder). Each card has vibrant colors and a clean reverse (the T215 has a small area of paper loss near the border) and has been carefully chosen by a very discerning collector for its supreme eye appeal. This group of eighteen cards represents almost every advertising back known to exist for the T206 Murphy (batting pose) tobacco card. Total: 18 cards.  Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,900
