1886 Lorillard's Philadelphia League Team Card
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,560
Rare and extremely desirable Lorillard's Tobacco advertising trade card featuring full-color portraits of the Philadelphia Quakers of the National League. Each of the eleven team members appears in a small circle with his name and position alongside, and the images are surrounding a baseball diamond and advertising for Lorillard's Splendid Plug Tobacco. The trade card was designed to advertise the team's official schedule for the 1886 season on the reverse, along with additional advertising for Lorillard's Splendid brand tobacco. Graded POOR 10 by SGC, the card presents as Good to Very Good from the front, with crisp images, flawless registration, even wear to the corners, and light creasing visible. The card is downgraded due to adhesive residue on the reverse and three small areas of paper loss, likely from album removal. Philadelphia is one of four different teams known in this rare set. (The others are Chicago, Detroit, and New York.) This very attractive example of this extremely rare and substantial nineteenth-century tobacco-card set would be an outstanding addition to any Philadelphia Quakers or type-card collection. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,560
