1942 John Steinbeck Signed War Department Physical Examination Postcard
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $420
War Department physical examination postcard, dated December 11, 1942, signed by John Steinbeck (1902-1968), American Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Issued by the War Department (Hq. Southern California Military District), this postcard was supposed to be signed and mailed back to the Los Angeles Procurement Office in affirmation that the undersigned recipient had completed his mandated physical examination on the date noted. As indicated here, Steinbeck completed his physical examination on December 11, 1942, and then dutifully signed the card "John E. Steinbeck" in black ink (grading "9") on the appropriate line. The card is postmarked with the same date on the front. In the summer of 1942 Steinbeck was hired as a special consultant to the Secretary of War and also was also serving as the foreign news editor for the Office of War information. This physical was probably required of him in order to continue his work with those agencies. Steinbeck is considered one of the finest writers of his time and author of such classics as Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, and The Grapes of Wrath, which earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. In 1962 Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) displays a few light creases along the top border and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $420
