1932 Babe Ruth Slide Babe Slide Promotional Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
Publicity photo of Babe Ruth issued by Universal Pictures in 1932 to promote its instructional baseball film Slide Babe Slide, which starred Babe Ruth. This is an exceedingly rare Babe Ruth photo. Not only is it the first example we have ever offered, it is also the first we have ever seen! The photo pictures Ruth, dressed in a generic baseball uniform, striking a batting pose on the field. A large Babe Ruth facsimile signature is boldly stamped to the right of his image. The white-letter caption along the base reads "Universal Pictures Star." The text on the reverse reads "See the Bambino Himself!/Babe Ruth/In a Human-Interest Baseball Story/'Slide Babe Slide'/at the/Keeney Theatre/Sunday, June 19th - - 4 Days/Note - - 2 More Babe Ruth Stories Coming Every Other Week." The text further promotes the feature presentation: Thunder Below starring Tallulah Bankhead. Obviously, this photo was distributed by Universal for use by theaters across the country, with the printing on the reverse tailored by each participating theater to reflect its respective screening schedule. Theaters may have given them away freely, or they may have been offered as a premium to paying customers. Babe Ruth teamed with Universal Pictures to create a series of five one-reel instructional baseball films in 1932, each of which featured Ruth interacting on the field with a group of young children. The four other titles in the series were Just Pals, Perfect Control, Fancy Curves, and Over the Fence. Even today the films are still entertaining, with Ruth clearly enjoying his time on camera with the children (Slide Babe Slide can be seen in its entirety on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vT8v39c-2880). The photo (8 x 10.25 inches), printed with a glossy front on thin paper stock, displays a number of small edge tears and light creasing throughout. In Very Good condition overall. This is an extremely rare and interesting Babe Ruth promotional piece that should be equally appealing to both baseball and film collectors alike. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $840
