1909 Philadelphia Athletics (vs. Detroit) Program - Cobb Spikes Barry!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $360
Philadelphia Athletics fold-over program issued for a game against the Detroit Tigers at Shibe Park in 1909. The preprinted lineups include Collins, Baker, Davis, Murphy, and Plank for Philadelphia, and Cobb, Crawford, and McIntyre for Detroit. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 4-3 Athletics victory. A vintage handwritten pencil notation on the interior reads "Sept. 20 1909" and research confirms that the A's did beat the Tigers 4-3 on that date. Another interesting period notation on the interior notes that in the top of the fourth inning Ty Cobb spiked shortstop Jack Barry while sliding into second while legging out a double. Barry's injury was obviously bad enough that he had to be replaced by Stuffy McInnis. Just one month earlier Cobb had spiked Frank Baker in Detroit, which resulted in even the usually mild-mannered Connie Mack to publicly chide Cobb for his dirty tactics. Obviously, that rebuke didn't deter Cobb from continuing his aggressive style of base running in this series. In addition to being an extremely early major league program, this example also dates from Shibe Park's inaugural season, making it especially desirable to collectors. The program (7 x 11 inches; folded) is lightly toned and displays a number of small edge tears and chips. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $360
