1908 New York Giants (vs. Brooklyn) Scorecard (Mathewson Pitches Shutout)
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $600
Eight-page New York Giants program issued for a game against the Brooklyn Superbas at the Polo Grounds in 1908. The preprinted lineups on the interior scorecard pages include Bresnahan, Mathewson, Donlin, Tenney, and Devlin for New York, and Hummell, Jordan, Burch, and Lumley for Brooklyn. The program is neatly scored to record an eleven-inning 1-0 victory by the Giants, with Mathewson recording the complete-game shutout. Research indicates that this game took place on September 8th and the win helped keep the Giants a half game in front of the Chicago Cubs for first place in the standings. Two weeks later, on September 23rd, Fred Merkle's base-running mistake cost the Giants a victory against the Cubs at the Polo Grounds. That miscue on the bases, forever known as "Merkle's Boner," ultimately cost the Giants the pennant that season. The program (6.75 x 10.25 inches) displays four horizontal folds, partially detached covers (both covers are only attached at the top staple), and oxidation to the staples. In Very Good condition. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $600
