Circa 1930 Chuck Klein Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $300
Official National League (Heydler) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Chuck Klein. Klein's signature, scripted in black fountain pen (grading "2/3"") occupies both a portion of the sweet spot and the adjacent side panel to the left. It must be noted that the ball displays an indeterminate number of signature removals. The reason for those removals was, of course, so that the ball would display as a Chuck Klein single-signed ball, and in that regard the objective has been fulfilled. As most collectors are aware, Chuck Klein single-signed balls are extremely rare and (when available) oftentimes exceed most collecting budgets. (We have sold only one example in the past thirty years!) The fact that this ball offers very similar aesthetic appeal as any other Klein single, but will sell for a significant discount to a true single-signed ball, makes it an attractive and practical alternative for many collectors. This ball dates to the 1928-1933 manufacturing period, with means it was almost certainly signed by Klein during his early playing career (Klein's Major League career spanned the years 1928 to 1944). The ball, which appears to have been partially coated with a moderate layer of shellac, displays an area of discoloration on a side panel and minor abrasions. In Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $300
