Circa 1910 T218 Mecca "Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters" and T220 Champions Boxing Collection (144 cards) Including T220 Near-Complete Set (45/50)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200
Collection of 144 cards from two different classic 1910-era tobacco issues featuring boxers and other athletes. These cards were part of a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots on the Internet Only section). 1) T218 Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters (67 cards): Fifty-eight different cards. The T218s feature boxers and various champion athletes of the era, including bowlers, billiards champions, and track-and-field stars. This collection consists of thirty-six boxers plus three duplicates, nine billiards players plus four duplicates, and thirteen assorted plus two duplicates. Condition of the collection is Vg-Ex to Ex overall, with ten Gd to Vg (including one Pr). We submitted three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: Attell (EX+ 70), Jeffries/arms crossed (EX 60), Johnson/front (EX 60), Johnson/side (Vg-Ex), and Ketchell (Vg). 2) T220 Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters Series (77 cards): Near-complete set of 45/50 cards plus thirty-two duplicates. The T220 series features exclusively boxers and champion prizefighters of the era. The near-complete set grades Vg-Ex to Ex overall, with four lesser, while the duplicates grade Vg-Ex to Ex, with ten lesser. Some of the cards measure slightly small, and such size variations are common to this issue. Keys: Corbett (Vg-Ex), Dempsey (Ex+), Dixon (Vg), Fitzsimmons (Ex+), Gans (Pr), two Jackson (both Ex), four Jeffries/Sharkey (two Vg-Ex, one Vg+, and one Vg), Sullivan (Vg-Ex+), and Sullivan/Kilrain (Vg-Ex+). This is a very crisp, clean, and attractive collection of 1910-era tobacco cards. In the opinion of many collectors (and with good reason in our opinion), these sets represent an extraordinary collecting value! Total: 144 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,200
