1936 R301 Overland Candy Luke Appling
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $240
Presented is a very attractive example of Chicago White Sox Hall of Famer Lucius (Luke) Appling from the R301 Overland Candy series. The extremely rare Overland Candy set doubled as the actual wrappers for Overland Candy. Not surprisingly, these 5 x 5.25 inch paper wrappers are usually found with folds and creases. R301s are printed in various colors, with a line drawing portrait of the player, his formal name and nickname, team, position, and career summary. The offered example of Appling is bright and crisp, with light wrinkling around the perimeter and a small, unobtrusive tear in the bottom edge, both of which are very common with this issue due to its thin stock and method of distribution. Encapsulated by SGC as "Authentic" due to having been neatly trimmed on all four sides to dimensions of 4-1/2 x 5-1/8 inches. This is the ONLY example of Appling ever graded by SGC or PSA! An extremely presentable Hall of Fame example with tremendous eye appeal from this very rare and unusual 1930s issue! Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $240
