1911 T205 Gold Border Edward Phelps SGC NM 84 - Extremely Rare Drum Back - First Confirmed Example and Finest Drum Back Ever Graded!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,800

Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). Ultra high grade and rare example of Edward Phelps (St. Louis Cardinals) from the T205 Gold Border set featuring a Drum advertising reverse. This card is part of an exciting find of eight Drums discovered recently as part of a large tobacco-card collection passed down through the same family for more than one hundred years. Seven of the eight Drum backs are offered in this auction (the eighth, a duplicate, is being kept by our consignor). It also has the distinction of being the first confirmed example of Phelps with a Drum back! Only Hindu can compete with Drum in terms of rarity among T205 advertising backs. Prior to this find, we have only ever offered two other T205 Drum backs! The offered card is outstanding in every way! A grade of NM 84 would be exceptional for any 1910-era tobacco card, but to find a high-grade example of a rare back, such as Drum, is virtually impossible. In fact, this is the finest-condition Drum back ever evaluated by SGC! Twenty-two of the twenty-six Drum backs submitted to date to SGC grade VG or lesser. The offered card is bright and crisp, both front and back, with bold colors, outstanding centering, and light touches of wear at the tips of the corners. The reverse is perfectly clean, which is ideal for a rare T205 advertising-back example. To date, this is the ONLY example of Phelps with a Drum back ever graded by SGC. This is a very attractive and exceptionally high grade extreme rare-back example from one of the premier tobacco-card sets of the era.  Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,800
