1960 Leaf "Foney Ads" Complete PSA-Graded Set (72)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,080

High-grade complete set of one of the 1960s' most striking and unusual nonsport issues: 1960 Leaf "Foney Ads." This may not be the most expensive set of the era, or the auction, but it's hard not to appreciate the exceptional quality of this overlooked 1960 nonsport issue that is a direct predecessor of the many other humorous sets of the 1960s. This set was Leaf Gum's first attempt at humorous trading cards. Each card spoofs a major consumer product of the period (for instance "Old Mice" or "Mr. Mean"). Leaf's "Foney Ads" is a particularly significant set in that it is widely recognized as establishing the general concept and design for Topps' popular "Wacky Packages," which were issued seven years later. Sixty-eight of the seventy-two cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The complete PSA condition composite follows: One MINT 9: #43 (OC). Eight NM-MT 8: #10 (MC), 26 (OC), 29 (OC), 35 (OC), 36 (OC), 47 (OC), 49 (OC), and 59. Fifteen NM 7: # 6 (ST), 9, 14, 15, 17, 25, 31 (ST), 45, 46, 56 (MC), 58, 60, 62 (ST), 67, and 69. Twenty-two EX-MT 6: #3, 11, 12, 13, 16, 18 (MC), 20 (ST), 22 (MC), 27, 28, 30, 32 (MC), 33, 39, 42, 44, 52, 54, 55, 61, 66, and 71. Two EX+ 5.5: #5 and 48. Eleven EX 5: #7, 24, 34, 37, 38, 51, 53, 57, 63, 64, and 72 (MC). Seven VG-EX 4: #1, 2 (MC), 8, 40 (MC), 50 (MC), 65, and 68. Two VG 3: #4 and 70. Four Ungraded: #19, 21, 23, and 41. Condition of the ungraded cards is Vg-Ex to Ex+. This is an extremely attractive complete set of this very substantial and classic nonsport-card set. Total: 72 cards.  Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
