1909-1911 T206 White Border Printing Anomaly Collection (3) - Polar Bear "Missing IE" Variations

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200

Presented are three extremely rare printing anomalies from the legendary T206 White Border series. Each of the three cards features a Polar Bear advertising reverse and is missing the "ie" in "Base Ball Series" that normally appears near the bottom of the reverse underneath "The Best Scrap Tobacco." This printing anomaly has been known by advanced T206 collectors and scholars for many years but only recently has it become more widely recognized. To date, the printing anomaly is only found on three players: Bergen/catching, Bradley/with bat, and Doolan/batting. Two of the three players are featured in this lot (Bergen, graded VG/EX 50 by SGC, and two Doolan, graded VG 40 and GOOD 30 by SGC); Bradley is considered the rarest of the three, with only two examples confirmed at this time. Some collectors are quick to dismiss these variations because the nature of the variation, which was apparently caused by a printing plate defect affecting only a very limited print run, is subtle. In the future we have no idea if the Polar Bear "missing IE" cards will be considered an obscure footnote to the T206 set or celebrated as one of the T206 set's extremely valuable rarities. In either case, it is certainly an interesting variation to T206 scholars. When it comes to the T206 set, which is the most highly collected of all vintage-card sets, anything unusual (especially if it might in any way shed light on the mysteries of how the T206 set was printed) is of great note. As collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and unusual cards associated with the landmark T206 set. This is an extremely rare and unusual set of printing anomalies that we believe will greatly interest collectors of the various nuances found within this iconic set. Total: 3 cards.  Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,200
