1948 Leaf "Pirates" Complete Set (49): #4 PSA Set Registry (8.43 GPA)!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,900

Presented is a spectacular ultra high-grade complete set of 1948 Leaf "Pirates" consisting of all forty-nine cards in the set. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set currently ranks fourth on the PSA Set Registry with an impressive 8.43 overall GPA. (Please Note: In the printed catalog the set is referred to as ranking #2 on the PSA Set Registry. After the catalog was sent to the printer additional sets were registered, and the offered set now lists as #4.) This popular set features various pirates from throughout history in colorful portraits and scenes. The primitive design and unusual coloration process used by Leaf make this issue very susceptible to printing flaws, and collecting the set in high grade is extremely challenging. This set is also notorious for the cards often being out of register. PSA Grading Composite: Seven MINT 9: #23, 41, 46, 78, 101, 116, and 136. Four NM-MT+ 8.5: #45, 50, 58, and 79. Thirty-three NM-MT 8: #2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 16, 21, 22, 24, 28, 30, 31, 35, 38, 40, 42, 49, 51, 62, 73, 80, 88, 99, 100, 112, 125, 133, 158, 164, 165, and 168. Five NM 7: #1, 65, 92, 96, and 124. Seventeen of the cards in this set are the highest-grade examples on record with PSA. This is an extremely attractive and remarkably high-grade complete set of this classic 1940s nonsport issue. Total: 49 cards.  Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,900
