1887 to 1912 SGC-Graded Hall of Fame Tobacco-Card Collection (18) Including T206 Cobb Orange Background
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,300
Collection of eighteen different tobacco cards representing four different highly regarded issues and spanning the years 1887 to 1912. The collection is comprised exclusively of Hall of Famers (except for two extremely desirable Old Judge "Brown's Champions") and is highlighted by Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young. Interestingly, the T206 Ty Cobb red background card in this collection has an entirely orange background, a known but unusual phenomenon with this card. While we cannot be sure of what caused the change in color, whether it is as printed or whether environmental factors are responsible, this card is sure to be fascinating to the many collectors and researchers of the T206 set. The cards in this collection have been passed down through the same family for decades and are being offered publicly for the first time! (Note: the family has many other cards as well; these cards were chosen by the family to sell specifically because they are especially desirable cards that would bring a higher price per card.)
We submitted all eighteen cards to SGC for grading and encapsulation. This collection consists of the following: 1-2) 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes: Kemler (Brown's Champions, FAIR 20) and Welch (Brown's Champions, GOOD+ 35). 3-14) 1909-1911 T206 White Borders: Baker (GOOD+ 35), Brown/Chicago on shirt (GOOD 30), Chance/yellow (Authentic, presents Fr), Cobb/red (POOR 10), Evers/Chicago with bat (VG/EX 50), Johnson/portrait (GOOD+ 35), Lajoie/with bat (VG 40), Mathewson/white cap (VG 40), McGraw/finger in air (GOOD+ 35), Speaker (Authentic, presents Gd), Tinker/hands on knees (FAIR 20), and Young/glove shows (GOOD+ 35). 15-16) 1911 T205 Gold Borders: Bresnahan/mouth closed (American Beauty, GOOD 30) and Huggins (American Beauty, VG 40). 17-18) 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders: Collins Easily Safe (Collins/Murphy, VG 40) and The Athletic Infield (Brown/Graham, VG 40). Although this collection is in overall modest condition, it is comprised exclusively of key cards (almost all Hall of Famers) and offers an outstanding opportunity to acquire authentic tobacco cards, including some of the most classic cards ever produced, at a fraction of the cost of higher-graded examples. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the five half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and excluding the two cards graded Authentic and the two N172s, for which there is no SMR) is $2,600. Total: 18 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,300
