1933 R174 Goudey "World War Gum" Complete Set (96) Plus Wrapper and Album Back Cover
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,080
Complete 96-card set of R174 "World War Gum" issued by Goudey and accompanied by an original wax wrapper and a back cover to the card album designed to house the set. Goudey's "World War Gum" series is one of the most popular nonsport sets ever issued. The orange and red cards feature black-and-white photos of various war scenes, with a card title printed on front and a description of the scene on the reverse. Condition of the set is 70% Vg-Ex to Ex with 30% lesser (mostly Pr to Gd). The wax wrapper (4-3/16 x 6 inches) has four small tape stains in each corner but is otherwise in excellent condition, with normal fold lines visible. The back cover of the album features a colorful illustration of soldiers silhouetted against explosions in the background, with the line "Courtesy of Goudey Gum Co." underneath and printed statistics of the war, including casualties by country, printed on the inside of the cover. It is in modest condition overall, but still a very desirable companion piece to the set. Compared to baseball cards of the era, these early nonsports cards, which are at least as scarce, represent a particularly outstanding value. In our experience, we have found the 1933 R174 Goudey "World War Gum" set to be a particularly difficult to find set. This is the first complete set of this issue that we have ever offered. Total: 96 cards plus one wax wrapper and one album cover. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,080
