Rare Circa 1886 Duke "Preferred Stock Cigarettes" Cabinet Card
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,080
Extremely rare circa 1886 tobacco advertising cabinet card! This formal studio cabinet pictures a woman posing in an office next to a stock ticker-tape machine (itself a fascinating relic of the past). The advertisement for "Preferred Stock Cigarettes," a very early Duke's cigarette brand, appears stamped along the base. Additional advertising is displayed in the background, with "Preferred Stock Cigarettes" printed on the bulletin board and "W. Duke Sons & Co." printed on the window of the office door. This is one in a series of extremely rare similar-style Preferred Stock Cigarettes cabinets issued at the time, most of which featured beautiful young woman. We have never seen this particular example before. This is an outstanding nineteenth-century nonsport rarity and sample card. The cabinet (6.75 x 11 inches) displays modest border wear and a few light pencil notations on the reverse. In Excellent condition overall.
Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,080
