1898-1901 T63 LeRoy "Generals" Complete Set (25) Plus Seven Large-Size Variations

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,680

Extremely rare complete set of twenty-five circa 1900 T63 LeRoy Little Cigars “Generals” plus seven large-size variations for a total of thirty-two cards. Each card is slightly larger than a typical insert card (of slightly earlier and later eras) at 2 x 3-1/8 inches (the larger variations measure 2-1/8 x 3-1/2 inches). Each card features a portrait image of a U.S. General (or naval officer or administration member) surrounded by a beautiful colorful lithograph of a battle scene or soldier-in-action image or of a scene relating to the individual's field of interest. Issued during or very shortly after the Spanish-American War (1898), the set includes Teddy Roosevelt (identified as Col. Roosevelt) and President William McKinley (who was President from 1896 until his assassination in 1901). The backs are blank. All the cards have extremely bold colors, with eleven cards grading Vg to Vg-Ex and fourteen cards graded lower (the majority of which present as Vg, but have some flaw, such as paper loss or writing, on the blank reverse). The seven large-size variations grade two Vg and five lesser. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal. A very rare complete set of this fascinating nonsport issue! Total: 32 cards (complete set of 25 plus 7 variations).  Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,680
