Tremendous 1887-1890 Kinney Bros. Nonsport Tobacco-Card Collection (968 cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900
Presented is an extremely substantial collection of 968 tobacco cards from twenty different Kinney Bros. issues dating between 1887 and 1890. Truly a collection unto itself, this incredible assemblage includes samples and groups from some of the nineteenth-century's most popular nonsport-card sets. This tremendous grouping is part of an extremely large nonsport-card collection consigned to this auction, with more than two dozen sets offered individually and the balance offered in a series of group lots and collections. While the condition of the cards in this collection spans several grades, it is an extremely pleasing group overall and in relatively consistent condition. In the condition composite below, it is noted that some cards grade technically lesser than the overall condition for the given set. In almost all cases, the cards present in the same condition when viewed from the front but are downgraded due to small flaws on the reverse, such as pencil notations, album residue, or paper loss, all extremely common flaws when dealing with nineteenth-century cards. This collection consists of the following: 1) N50 Famous Ships (28 cards): Vg to Vg-Ex, with seven lesser. 2) N216 Animals (22 cards): Vg-Ex to Ex, with two lesser. 3) N217 Butterflies of the World (85 cards): Vg to Ex, with twenty-five lesser due to flaws on the reverse or small spots of color added along the gold edges. 4) N218 Famous Gems of the World (18 cards): Vg-Ex to Ex, with four lesser. 5) N219 Harlequin Cards - 1st Series (50 cards): Thirty-three different. Vg to Ex, with twelve lesser. 6) N220 Harlequin Cards - 2nd Series (35 cards): Vg to Ex, with twelve lesser. 7) N221 Jocular Oculars (2 cards): Both Pr. 8) N222 Leaders (25 cards): Seventeen different. Vg to Ex, with nine lesser. 9) N223 Magic Changing Cards (4 cards): Fr to Gd. 10) N225 National Dances (79 cards): Twenty-four borderless variations. Vg-Ex to Ex, with twenty-five lesser. 11) N226 Naval Vessels of the World (44 cards): Twenty-three different. Vg to Ex, with eleven lesser. 12) N227 New Years 1890 Cards (43 cards): Thirty-one different. Vg to Vg-Ex, with twenty-one lesser. 13) N229 Famous Running Horses - American (13 cards): Vg, with eight lesser. 14) N231 Great American Trotters (21 cards): Vg to Vg-Ex, with sixteen lesser. 15) N232 Surf Beauties (3 cards): Two Vg-Ex, one Fr. 16) N233 Transparent Playing Cards (406 cards): Condition ranges from Fr to Vg-Ex (averaging Gd/Vg). 17) N238 International Cards (10 cards): Vg, with two lesser. 18) N240 Types of Nationalities (38 cards): Vg, with fourteen different, almost all of which are partially or completely separated. 19) N241 Harlequin Playing Cards (39 cards): Vg, when viewed from the front, but almost all have moderate to severe back damage. 20) N242 Calendar Card (3 cards): All Gd. This is an incredible collection, with many highlights, offering tremendous break value, if desired, or outstanding foundations for the completion of these very popular nonsport-card sets.
