1909-1911 T206 White Border PSA- and SGC-Graded Partial Set (382/524)

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $27,000

Presented is an incredible partial set of T206 White Borders, comprised of 382 different cards out of the 524 cards in the set (73% complete). This T206 partial set is highlighted by fifteen Hall of Famers, as well as numerous other highlights, including all five Hal Chase cards, Dahlen/Brooklyn, Kleinow/Boston, Lundgren/Chicago, and three scarce Southern League series cards. Every card in this collection is professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (fifty) or SGC (332). The condition of this partial set is strong and remarkably consistent, with 361 cards ranging in grade from VG to EX+!

The partial set is comprised of twenty-six EX+ 70s (five are graded by PSA), 130 EX 60s (thirty-six are graded by PSA), fifteen VG/EX+ 55s, seventy-three VG/EX 50s (four are graded by PSA), thirteen VG+ 45s, 104 VG 40s (two are graded by PSA), six GOOD+ 35s, eleven GOOD 30s (three are graded by PSA), two FAIR 20s, and two POOR 10s. All cards are bright, crisp, and clean, having been carefully chosen by our consignor over a period of many years, and the very few cards graded less than EX are mostly pleasing examples downgraded due to minor flaws. A large group of T206, or a complete set, in the offered grade is a particularly hot commodity, always extremely desirable to collectors, offering the most classic 1910-era baseball-card set without requiring the hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars that a higher-grade set would cost. Even in low- to mid-grade a T206 set runs into real money, a function of there being so many cards in the set and so many highlights (HOFers, etc.), but is of interest to and within the reach of so many more collectors. When it comes time to sell, a T206 set in any grade can be sold as a unit, or can easily be broken up, providing a "built-in insurance policy." T206s are never going out of style and it is always a privilege to offer a complete set or a very substantial start towards one.

Keys: Bender/no trees (PSA VG 3), G. Brown/Wash. (VG/EX 50), Chance/batting (VG 40), Chase/trophy (EX 60), Chase/blue (VG/EX 50), Chase/pink (VG/EX 50), Chase/dark cap (EX 60), Chase/white cap (PSA EX 5), Cicotte (“Black Sox,” VG 40), Coles SL (VG/EX 50, Old Mill), G. Davis (VG 40), Dahlen/Brooklyn (GOOD 30), Doyle/N.Y. (VG 40), Evers/Cubs (PSA GOOD 2), Gandil ("Black Sox," VG 40, Polar Bear), Hart SL (GOOD 2), Huggins/hands (VG 40), Jennings/both hands (VG 40), Keeler/bat (VG 40), Kleinow/Boston (EX+ 70), Lundgren/Chicago (FAIR 20), Marquard/hands at thighs (VG 40), McGinnity (VG 40), McGraw/finger (VG 40), McGraw/glove (VG 40), Reagan SL (PSA VG-EX 4), Tinker/knees (VG 40), Waddell/throwing (GOOD 30), Willis/bat (GOOD 30), and Willis/throw (GOOD 30). The backs are all Piedmont or Sweet Caporal, except for four Old Mill and four Polar Bear. This partial set is missing only thirty "commons"; the balance of the missing cards are Hall of Famers, Southern Leaguers (the near-complete set that accompanied this collection is offered separately in this auction), or key rarities, such as Demmitt/St. Louis, Doyle, Elberfeld/Wash. port., Magie, and O'Hara/St. Louis.

This is a set with tremendous eye-appeal, appearing at a glance considerably stronger than suggested by the very respectable and accurate assigned grades. Impressive cards ranging in grade from Vg to Excellent condition, of which this partial set is primarily comprised, represent one of the most outstanding values in all vintage-card collecting. This is a beautiful partial set of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era, in an extremely desirable overall grade. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grades (factoring in the sixty-two half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $37,533. A complete breakdown of the cards included is available upon request. Total: 382 cards.   Reserve $10,000. Estimate $25,000++. SOLD FOR $27,000
