Tremendous 1887-1890 Duke Nonsport Tobacco-Card Collection (1,249 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,500

Presented is an extremely substantial collection of 1,249 tobacco cards from twenty different Duke issues dating between 1887 and 1890. (The number of 1887-1890 Duke tobacco cards in this lot is not a misprint: One-Thousand Two-Hundred and Forty-Nine cards!) Truly a collection unto itself, this incredible assemblage includes samples and groups from some of the nineteenth-century's most popular nonsport tobacco card sets. This tremendous lot is part of an extremely large nonsport-card collection consigned to this auction, with more than two dozen sets offered individually and the balance offered in a series of group lots and collections. While the condition of the cards in this collection spans several grades, it is an extremely pleasing group overall in relatively consistent condition. In the condition composite below, it is noted that some cards grade technically lesser than the overall condition for the given set. In almost all cases, the cards present in the same condition when viewed from the front but are downgraded due to small flaws on the reverse, such as pencil notations, album residue, or paper loss, all extremely common flaws when dealing with nineteenth-century tobacco cards.
