1888 N22 Allen & Ginter "Racing Colors of the World" Near-Complete Set (39/50) Plus 10 Variations
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $480
Near-complete set of 1888 N22 Allen & Ginter “Racing Colors of the World” consisting of thirty-nine different out of fifty cards in a complete set. Also included are ten variations and three duplicates for a total of fifty-two cards. Somewhat reminiscent in terms of their high quality and design to the N162 Old Judge & Gypsy Queen Champions series, these sporting cards, which were issued with Allen & Ginter Cigarettes, feature attractive women jockeys dressed in fancy jockey’s attire riding racehorses. The colors printed on the cards represent, at the time, well-known stables from around the world. The back of each card features a checklist of the set. Overall condition of the cards is Vg to Vg-Ex when viewed from the front, with three lesser; however, approximately one-third of the cards have a flaw on the reverse, such as pencil, glue, or a small area of paper loss, which would cause them to grade more modestly. The ten variations are cards without borders (cards in this set are found with full-color bleed and with white borders). This is a very presentable near-complete set of Allen & Ginter “Racing Colors of the World,” which has always been highly appreciated by nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors for its beauty and subject matter. Total: 52 cards (near-complete set of thirty-nine plus ten variations and three duplicates). Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $480
