1889 N232 Kinney Bros. "Surf Beauties" SGC-Graded Near-Complete Set (41/50)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $720

Near-complete set of 1889 N232 Kinney Bros. "Surf Beauties," consisting of forty-one cards (out of fifty), entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). This is a very attractive grouping of these rare and vibrant tobacco cards. Issued with Kinney's tobacco, these cards feature magnificent full-color illustrations of women dressed in bathing costumes of the day at different beaches throughout the world. Although the subjects’ bathing suits would hardly be considered revealing in today’s world, for their time these cards were extremely risqué. The set is checklisted on the back of the cards (Nantucket, Fire Island, Coney Island, etc.). SGC Grading Composite: Three EX/NM 80: #12, 30, and 33. Four EX+ 70: #1, 3, 14, and 31. Fourteen EX 60: #2, 6, 7, 8, 10, 19, 26, 27, 28, 34, 37, 44, 45, and 50. One VG/EX+ 55: #17. Two VG/EX 50: #18 and 29. Three VG 40: #23, 35, and 38. One GOOD+ 35: #47. Four GOOD 30: #9, 20, 21, and 24. Four FAIR 20: #4, 16, 22, and 40. Two POOR 10: #13 and 49. Three Authentic: #25, 42, and 48. This is an extremely attractive, culturally very interesting, and significant near-complete set with outstanding eye-appeal. This issue is highly prized by nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 41 cards.  Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $720
