1909-1911 T206 White Border Bill O'Hara - St. Louis Variation

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $5,400

Graded VG/EX+ 55 by SGC. Presented is a spectacular high-grade example of the rare T206 Bill O'Hara, St. Louis Americans variation. O'Hara, St. Louis, of course, is one of the key rarities of the T206 set in any condition, but it is almost never found in such high grade. Both the scarce Demmitt and O'Hara variations are true condition rarities. Most collectors don't even think about trying to find either of these two rare cards in high grade. Polar Bear was the only company to issue either of these team variation cards. T206 cards issued with Polar Bear tobacco were not well protected from the accompanying product. This is why T206 cards with Polar Bear advertising reverses almost always have various condition problems, including tobacco staining. This O'Hara example has much less staining than normally encountered (a few small spots near the bottom border and a few more scattered on the reverse). It is bright and crisp, with extremely fresh colors and light, even wear to the corners. The card is centered towards the bottom with the nameplate positioned a sliver above the bottom edge. The back has bold white printing set against a dark blue background. The SGC Population Report shows a total of 107 O'Hara, St. Louis variations graded to date, and of these, this is the only example graded at this level with just four EX 60s grading higher. The PSA Population Report shows 135 O'Hara, St. Louis cards graded to date, with two at this level and seven graded higher (four EX 5, two NM 7, and one EX-MT 6 with a qualifier). These population report numbers speak for themselves. This is an extraordinary card with only eleven examples grading higher between both PSA and SGC. The equivalent SMR value for a VG-EX 4 is $4,500 and $8,650 for an EX 5. There is no SMR value for the VG-EX+ 4.5 grade. This card is an exceptionally attractive example of T206 O'Hara, St. Louis, one of the rarest cards in the classic T206 White Border set, in an extremely high grade.
